INTRODUCTION TO A CIVIL MARRIAGE CEREMONY
- A civil marriage
ceremony allows you complete freedom of choice.
- It is your wedding.
You are the reason for, and the focus of, the ceremony.
- You choose the
celebrant, the date, the time, the place, the words, the
music and how you wish the ceremony to be conducted.
- Poems, readings and
music can be included.
- Family and friends are
welcome to take part ion the ceremony.
- A civil marriage
ceremony is a meaningful way of formally establishing a
marriage relationship.
- It is based on the
value of human relationships, appropriate cultural
values and symbols, and the strength of the marriage
bond.
- Personal commitment by
a couple is enhanced by their own involvement in the
preparation of their ceremony.
POSSIBLE
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED TO SUPPORT APPLICATION OF THE NOIM (
Notice Of Intent to Marry).

Certificate showing change of name.
Certified
photocopies of all required documents must be cited with the
originals.
TO MAKE THE MARRIAGE LEGAL
-
Marriage
ceremony performed within the dates of the visa
-
NOIM is
received at least one month and one day before the
ceremony.
-
NOIM is
not older than 18 months before the ceremony date.
-
All
relevant documents are completed and witnessed.
-
At least
one party of the couple to be married are over 18 years.
-
One party
of the couple may be over 16 years and under 18 years.
TO MAKE THE
CEREMONY LEGAL
-
Two
witnesses over the age of 18, who can understand what is
being said and what they are signing.

Inclusion
of the Celebrant's authority
-
The bride
and groom, when stating their vows must :
State their full names
State their intent by using the words "husband/wife" or
"spouse".
COMPLETING THE NOIM
-
By fax.
The original needs to be sighted before the marriage
takes place.

By e-mail.
Needs to be scanned so signatures are visible. The
original needs to be sighted before the marriage takes
place.

Witnessed
by an authorized celebrant or prescribed authority.
(Prescribed authority includes: An Australian Diplomatic
Officer, a Justice of the Peace, a barrister, a
solicitor, a Qualified Medical Practitioner, or a member
of the Australian State or Federal police Force.)

If
overseas the signatures on the NOIM need to be witnessed
by a Notary Public or an Australian Consular Office will
need to witness your signatures. The original documents
must be sighted by the celebrant before the marriage
takes place.
